Caufield Twomey Tribute

Caufield Dodd (Pete) Twomey of Cheshire passed away peacefully at age 102 on Saturday, August 1, 2020. He was the husband of the late Helen (McClellan) Twomey.

Pete was born in Somerville, MA on June 4, 1918. He graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII attaining the rank of Captain with the Engineering Corp., spending most of his time in the Pacific. Pete also served in the Army during the Korean War at the Brooklyn, NY supply depot. After the war he worked for Ryerson Steel in Maine then Connecticut for over 30 years until his retirement in 1986. Never one to sit still, with his love of boats and the water he held positions at EB Marine in Branford, CT and at Brewers Pilot Point Marina in Westbrook, CT for 16 years until his full retirement in 2002.

Pete’s love for sailing started at a young age. In his teens he built his own boat and it was during one of his initial sails of this boat he was presumed lost at sea during a storm. It was days later that he was found at a shoreline home safe and sound. He continued with his love of sailing working summers in Marblehead, MA on a 72’ ketch, the Ticonderoga. Later in life he could be found spending summers cruising the New England coastline with his wife and children on his sailboat.

His other love was skiing, which is how he met his wife in North Conway, NH in the late 1940’s. He and his wife were regulars at Mt. Southington ski area as he developed the Mt. Southington youth racing program. Many ski trips throughout New England are remembered fondly by his children.

Pete lived in Cheshire, CT for 52 years. He is survived by his children, John Twomey (Lovie) of Waikoloa, HI, Kenneth Twomey (Kathy) of Wallingford, Gregory Twomey (Colleen) of Madison, and Pamela Morris (Keith) of Simpsonville, SC. He is also survived by his grandchildren Cherisse Otsuka-Bence, Christine Gorman, Kevin Twomey, Ryan Sadang, Jared Twomey, Patrick Twomey, Carolyn Twomey and three great grandchildren.
