On September 2, 2022, Dan Heller, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle, died peacefully at ninety-two, surrounded by his family. Born April 30,1930 to Helen Grey and Israel Heller in New York City, Dan graduated from the Bronx High School of Science, and earned Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Business Administration from New York University. Dan proudly served in the U.S. Army as a medic during the Korean War. After the Army, he worked in finance in New York City where he met and married Ingrid Lütjens. They were married for fifty-five years.
Dan was very proud of his two daughters, Karen Lightman (Ari) of Pittsburgh, PA and Jennifer Reidy (Dan) of Corte Madera, CA. He deeply loved his grandchildren Katie, Eli, Hannah and Caroline; and nieces, Laura and Joyce.
Dan loved the outdoors, gardening, birdwatching, classical music, and had a deep knowledge of history and literature. He moved his family from New York City to Redding, CT in 1971. He and Ingrid bought the land, built a colonial style farmhouse and lived there happily for fifty years. The property sat adjacent to forestland where Dan birdwatched, provided winter shelter to eastern phoebe’s in his garage, and grew abundant blueberries.
Dan spent his career in finance, working for GTE, and was Chief Financial Officer for various small and medium-sized companies until his retirement in 1997. He was elected to Treasurer of Redding several times and was proud to serve his beloved town for decades.
The memorial will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at 11:00 am ET at Christ Church Parish, 184 Cross Highway, Redding, CT 06896. In lieu of giving flowers, the family asks that those who are able instead make a donation to The Mark Twain Library, Redding, CT https://marktwainlibrary.org/ or New Pond Farm, Redding, CT https://newpondfarm.org.
