Beverly Sue Hanscom (Denler), 91, passed away peacefully on Sept. 11 while in Hospice Care at Middlesex Hospital. Born in Putnam, Beverly lived most of her adult life in Woodstock, New York, and Wappingers Falls, New York. Upon retiring from her position as a medical receptionist in 2002, she moved back to Connecticut to be closer to family.
An avid reader, Beverly could often be found checking out piles of books from the local library, where the librarians knew her by name. Her friends affectionately referred to her as the chipmunk lady because she had trained them to climb into her lap for peanuts (the chipmunks, not the friends). She was known for her sense of humor and incredible generosity and had a little ditty to sing for every occasion.
She is survived by her daughter Elizabeth “Betsy” McHaley and her husband Ed Hofler; grandchildren, Beccah Wells Sparkes and her husband Bryan, Abbey Wells DuBois and her husband Hayden, Ryan McHaley Hofler, Corinna McHaley Hofler, and Kelli McHaley Hofler, Alexandra Hofler, Joe Hofler, and James Hofler; as well as her two great-grandchildren, Will Sparkes and Lucy Sparkes.
In addition, Beverly is survived by her siblings to whom she was very close, Charles Denler and Catherine East, as well as many nieces and nephews and her friends at Safe Harbor.
Daughter of the late George and Marie (Perweiler) Denler, Beverly was predeceased by her son Andrew R. Hanscom of Nederland, Colorado; her daughter Debra H. Wells of Old Lyme; and her ex-husband Robert W. Hanscom; as well as siblings Barbara and George Denler, Tressa Heckman, and Elizabeth Ray.
