Carolyn Bullock Metz, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on December 17, 2024. Born on November 15, 1929, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to the late Arthur Wellington Bullock and Elizabeth Matilda (Wright) Bullock, Carolyn grew up in the heart of the Great Depression. This challenging time instilled in her a deep passion for frugality and creativity, qualities that defined her life and inspired those around her.
Carolyn graduated from Stratford High School and pursued her artistic talents at Monticello College in Illinois and the prestigious Pratt Art Institute in New York City. Her career as a commercial artist brought her to Austin, Texas, where she created a logo for Lyndon Johnson’s Texas gubernatorial campaign, a project she held dear throughout her life. Later, she worked at the Famous Artists School in Westport, Connecticut, where she designed lesson plans to guide aspiring student artists.
On October 13, 1956, Carolyn married the love of her life, Bob Metz of Terre Haute, Indiana. Their marriage, which spanned an extraordinary 68 years, was a testament to their unwavering love and partnership. Together, they built a home filled with warmth, creativity, and a focus on family.
As a mother, Carolyn devoted herself entirely to her children, Doug and Sharon. Her dedication as a stay-at-home mom ensured a nurturing environment where her children flourished while basking in her care and guidance. She enjoyed many adventures with Sharon traveling around New England and especially their walks together. In her later years, Carolyn loved to walk with Sharon at Milford Landing; a long walk along the water and gardens while chatting with Sharon energized her and made her smile.
Carolyn’s passions extended to many areas of her life. She was a talented pianist who loved the works of Chopin and found great joy in playing Debussy’s "Clair de Lune." Her garden was her sanctuary, and she spent countless hours cultivating vibrant flowers and nourishing vegetables. Carolyn’s love for healthy living was ahead of her time, and she was a devoted advocate for organic food, even working part-time at the Good Health Shoppe health food store.
A skilled seamstress, Carolyn delighted in creating clothing for her family, including a stunning white tuxedo and wedding dress for Doug and Ruth’s wedding. Her creativity also extended to the kitchen, where she lovingly crafted homemade delicacies that brought joy to her family’s table.
Carolyn’s deep faith in Jesus was central to her life. She openly shared her passion for Jesus and her active faith with her family and friends. She served as a deaconess in Grace Communion International, played the piano, and sang in her church choir. Her compassion and generosity were evident in all she did.
Known affectionately as “Gramma the Great” by her great-grandchildren, Carolyn’s presence was a source of joy and inspiration for all generations of her family. She delighted in spending time with her husband, Bob, their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and her love extended to her beloved “Grand-poodles,” who were her loyal companions over the years.
Carolyn was predeceased by her parents and her sister, Evelyn Watt. She is survived by her devoted husband, Bob; her children, Doug (and his wife Ruth) of Carmel, IN, and Sharon of Shelton, CT; her grandchildren, Shari of Colorado Springs, CO, Rob of Westfield, IN, and Kendra of Woodland Hills, CA; and her great-grandchildren, Kirah and Taavi of Colorado Springs, CO, and Cash of Carmel, IN. She also leaves behind her cherished nephews, Bob and Richard Watt of Stratford, CT, and many dear friends.
Carolyn’s life was a vibrant and colorful tapestry of accomplishments and gifts shared with others. She leaves behind a legacy of love and creativity that will continue to inspire all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A celebration of Carolyn’s enduring and accomplished life will be held in the spring. Details will be announced at that time.
