HADDAM – Charles F. Heebner, 94, beloved husband of Jane Sanderson Heebner for 69 years, died Feb. 16, 2022, at his home in Haddam.
He was born May 26, 1927, in Waterbury, son of the late Carl F. Heebner and Helen Lawrence Heebner. He was a graduate of local schools, attended Brown University and graduated from Bryant College. He spent most of his life in Waterbury, moving to Watertown in 1996.
Charles served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired after 35 years with the original Colonial Trust Co., later merging with Bank Boston and Bank of America.
Bunker Hill Congregational Church was a central part of Charles’ life. He served in various capacities and sang in the choir for many years.
Charles was an avid reader. He was also a huge UConn women’s basketball supporter. He enjoyed watching “Jeopardy!” daily, and cooking shows on PBS. With a young family, Charles and Jane had continued a tradition of vacationing in Snug Harbor, R.I.
After retirement, they enjoyed wintering in Venice, Fla., and vacationing at various East Coast beaches with family.
Charles was predeceased by his infant son, Bronson C. Heebner. He is survived by a son, Lawrence C. Heebner and his wife Kathy, of Centerbrook; three daughters, Cheryl H. Juhnke and her partner Peter E. Portante Jr., of Plainville, Kim S. Clark of Charlotte, N.C., and Lois J. Heebner of Pineville, N.C. Left behind also are three grandsons, Benjamin C. Heebner with his wife Britney, Jonathan A. Heebner with his wife Claire, and Peter B. Portante; and four great-grandchildren, Natalie K. Heebner and Jack C. Heebner, Harper A. Heebner and Hayden S. Heebner; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Also predeceased by Charles were his brother, E. Richard Heebner; sisters, Shirley H. Beardsley, Doris H. Rauch and Nancie Pidge-Moore; and his daughter-in-law, Karen M. Heebner.
A celebration of his life will be at a future date. Memorial donations can be made to a veteran’s organization of your choice.
