Cynthia Ann Smedick

Cynthia Smedick (née Chant), 74, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2026.

A long-time resident of Plainville, CT, she and her husband Daniel Smedick were active members of the local community, where she served for many years as a school crossing guard for the Plainville Police Department. Cynthia also was a published artist and muralist. Locals may remember the disco mural she painted on a wall in Walko's, a once popular establishment in the 1960s and early 70s. Earlier in her professional life, she worked as an executive assistant at Connecticut General Life Insurance Company (now Cigna) in Bloomfield, CT.

Cynthia is survived by Danny, her husband of 55 years, who served for years as Assistant Chief with the Plainville Fire Department, and her beloved and devoted only child Darren Smedick and wife Becky (Parent) of Middletown, who cared for Cynthia in their home during her long illness and were by her side at her death. Also with her were her two sisters Christine (Chant) Born of Winsted, CT, and Cheryl Chant of Navarre, FL, married respectively to Christopher Born and Ken Rudzki. She was predeceased by her parents Raymond and Edith (Stockwell) Chant of Plainville, and brother Raymond Chant Jr. of Middletown. 

Cynthia enjoyed visits to Cape Cod and Florida with her nieces and nephews Nathan Kozakiewicz of Navarre Beach, FL, Jordan (Melissa) Kozakiewicz of Winston-Salem, NC, Sara Kozakiewicz of Los Angeles, CA, and Jessica Kozakiewicz (Tim) of Los Angeles, CA, as well as Eli Born (Lizzy) of Chadds Ford, PA. In addition, she spent many adventures, beach visits and coffee hours with her cousin Ellen Stockwell of Unionville, CT, a long-time companion and best friend, and her close friend Georgia Burgess of Plainville, CT. She also is survived by her sister-in-law Corinne (Conrad) Chant of Berlin and children, Lonny Chant (Julia) of Cornwall, VT, Ola Herrera (Jonathon) of Farmersville, TX, Vaughan Chant of Doha, Qatar, and Edith-Marie Iovene (Mike) of Berlin, CT.

Generations of family relatives and friends remember Cynthia's wonderful smile and strong sense of humor at family gatherings and reunions. Despite her long illness and frequent hospitalizations, she maintained her good spirits and sharp wit, always ready with a good quip.

Arrangements are being handled by Connecticut Cremations in Wallingford, CT. An informal gathering to celebrate Cynthia will be held at a later date. The family wants to recognize and thank the staff at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, especially those at the Hospice Comfort Care Unit who took wonderful care of Cynthia, providing guidance and support to her family in the last weeks of her life.
