South Bronx, N.Y. - Mildred Hughes, 92, passed away Saturday, Nov. 27, 2021. She was born April 2, 1929, to James Hughes and Ethel Clark Hughes who predeceased her. She had three older brothers, John, Joseph, and James Hughes. Her brothers, John and Joseph predeceased her. She leaves her brother James and his wife Eileen, their sons, Michael, Kevin and Richie. James' son, her nephew Jimmy, predeceased her.

Mildred leaves her only child Richard Hanratty Sr. and his wife Judith. She raised "Richie" as a single mother in the inner city of New York. She worked hard and sacrificed to give him a good life and to keep him out of trouble on the tough streets of the Bronx. Mildred leaves her granddaughter Kara Mignosa, her husband Doug and great-grandchildren, Quinn and Ryan. She also leaves her grandson Rich Hanratty Jr., his wife Kate and great-grandchildren, Luke and Grace.

She leaves many close friends in New York including Richard Arroyo Izquierdo and Ricardo Cosme Ruiz, Carmen Arroyo, Isa Rodriguez, Jenny Fuentes and Dalys Carranza.

Mildred was tough as nails. She valued her independence and was very generous. She moved to Connecticut due to health problems and lived at the Groton Regency for her last few years. If you don't think that there are angels on earth, you have not seen nursing home staff in a pandemic. Thank you to the staff at Groton Regency. Your love, kindness and resiliency were amazing. Many thanks to the incredible staff of L + M and Hospice as well.

Many New York City cats had a nicer life thanks to Mildred. If you would like to donate to help a stray cat in her honor, you can help to continue her mission at http://Bronxtales.org.
