Mona Premo (Poitras), 71, passed away peacefully on August 4, 2025, in Groton, Connecticut. Born on April 4, 1954, in Grand Falls, New Brunswick, Canada, Mona grew up in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, for where she began a life filled with warmth, resilience, and an enduring love for family and community.
Mona dedicated much of her life to the restaurant industry, where her passion for cooking and hospitality left a lasting impression. She worked as both a cook and manager in several establishments throughout her career. Among her most notable roles was serving as a shift manager at Cedar's Steakhouse at Foxwoods Casino. In her later years, she found joy assisting her best friend Carol with her restaurant. There, Mona shared cherished family recipes that became beloved staples among locals from Old Mystic, Ledyard, and Stonington-recipes that Carol continues to serve with pride.
Family was at the heart of everything Mona did. She met the love of her life, Bob, and together they raised their sons Robert and James along with stepdaughter Melissa in Groton-a town that became home not only to Mona but also to the many friendships she cultivated over the years. Her presence in Groton was deeply felt; she was well known and warmly regarded by many in the community.
Mona is lovingly remembered by her sons: Robert Premo and his fiancée Theresa Bergstrand; James Premo and his wife April; and by her stepdaughters: Melissa Roode and her husband Eric; Brenda LaFleur and her husband Mike; and Jennifer Dargonne . She leaves behind a legacy through her grandchildren: Gabrielle, Arianna, Nicholas, Christopher, Travis, Sophia, Kayleigh, Isabelle, Ryan, Angelina, Gianna, Chase, Levi, and Anastasia-as well as many beautiful great-grandchildren who brought immense joy to her life.
She was predeceased by her husband Bob Premo, parents Marc and Rita Poitras; brothers Robert, Alphee and Joe; and sister Diane.
Beyond her professional accomplishments and devotion to family life, Mona will be remembered for the simple joys she embraced-her love of cooking and baking filled homes with comforting aromas and hearts with warmth. A voracious reader with an infectious spirit for life's little pleasures, she also had a signature dance that never failed to bring smiles to those around her.
A celebration of Mona's life will be held on Saturday, August 30th from 12:00 PM until 3:00 PM at Par Four Restaurant located at 93 Plant Street in Groton, CT.
Those who knew Mona will forever carry the memory of her laughter-filled kitchen conversations, heartfelt generosity, and joyful spirit. May her memory bring comfort to all who loved her.
