Parley J. Agner, of New Haven, died October 23, 2024, at his residence after a long illness. He was 68 years old.
Born April 9, 1956, to Parley J. Agner, Jr., and Lois Agner (Kaufman) of Leipsic, OH, Parley was one of five siblings. After graduating from Bowling Green State University, Parley considered going into ministry, but decided to pursue law instead, earning a law degree from Columbia University. From New York, he moved to New Haven to study history and philosophy at Yale University. He remained in New Haven the rest of his life.
A longtime member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in New Haven, Parley was a faithful participant in a weekly Bible study, where he contributed not only his sharp intellect and wit but also what all considered to be the best chili in New Haven. He was a regular attendee at St. John's daily Morning Prayer services in the chapel, and a devoted lay minister in the parish’s outreach to the poor. Parley was passionate about the life of the mind in the living out of the Christian faith, reading widely in the theologians, philosophers, and biblical scholars. His knowledge of philosophy, theology, and life was always enlightening — and always paired with humility and empathy.
Parley cared deeply about his adopted hometown. He was a tireless advocate for the homeless. He spearheaded a yearly winter clothing drive at his church, and got donations of hand warmers from a manufacturer to distribute to homeless people. He also mentored a Wilbur Cross High School student who credits Parley with having a long-lasting positive impact on his life.
Parley loved music, especially gospel and classical music, and he enjoyed singing. As a senior in high school, he played the lead in the school production of “Fiddler on the Roof.” It was Parley’s stage debut and not even his family knew he could sing. The production was such a success that it sold out, and extra performances were added. He was also an avid chess player, and as a boy took great delight in beating his older brother Ken at the game.
Parley was the author of The Joy of Logic: An Introduction to Logical Thinking and Critical Thinking, written for both general readership as well as those preparing for standardized tests.
Parley is survived by two brothers, Kenneth Bucher (Ada) of Clyde, NC, and Patrick Agner (Ingrid) of Leipsic, OH; and a sister, Pamela Hollar (Darrel), of Lima, OH. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Donald Bucher.
A funeral service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, New Haven; the date and time are pending. Memorial contributions can be made either to St. John’s Episcopal Church, 400 Humphrey Street, New Haven, CT 06511, or to Leeway, 40 Albert Street, New Haven, CT 06511.
