Mystic - Robert Henry Yost, 87, of Mystic, passed away Monday morning, Sept. 2, 2024, at Avalon Heath Center in Mystic. Robert was born March 25, 1937, in Cumberland, Md., the son of Henry and Katherine (Johnson) Yost. He was married to Deronda Grout Sept. 10, 1960, in East Arlington, Vt.
He graduated from RPI in 1961, with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and spent 35 years working at Electric Boat. He was a member of the Mystic Congregational Church and founding member of the New London Branch of the Connecticut MG club. Robert loved the outdoors and spent time camping throughout his life, but his pride and joy were his MG cars that he restored and showed.
He and Deronda traveled extensively during their retirement, but decided to move to the StoneRidge community in June of 2021. Robert enjoyed the woodworking group there and helped to build the train for their Nordic Village. He also took up billiards and enjoyed his weekly games.
He leaves his wife of almost 64 years; his daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Geoffrey McLean of Norwich; son-in-law James Moran Jr., wife Leah and daughter Payton of Salem; two grandchildren, Libby McLean and her husband Chris Chappell of Middletown, and James Moran III and his fiancée Jonna Kosma of Groton. He was predeceased by one daughter, Karen Moran; and his sister and brother-in-law, Martha and John VanNatter.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at StoneRidge, 186 Jerry Browne Road, Mystic. A time of fellowship and refreshments will follow. Interment at Elm Grove Cemetery in Mystic will be private. Should friends desire, memorial gifts in memory of Robert may be made to The Parkinson's Foundation.
