Susan F Domizi of Guilford, CT, Cambridge, MD, and Athens, GA died on December 10, 2024 following a battle with cancer.
Susan was born in Plainfield, NJ in 1942. As a child, she developed a deep love of nature and of horses, which would become her life’s passion. She attended high school in Darien, CT, excelling in academics and music, becoming first chair clarinetist in the all-state orchestra, and graduating in 1959. She attended Colby College in Maine, then finished her biochemistry training at Columbia University, graduating in 1964. A lifelong environmentalist, she worked on the Connecticut Governor’s Clean Water Task Force in 1966-67.
After a brief period in cancer research, Susan dove into her love of horses, becoming a serious competitor, frequent victor, and outstanding trainer in equestrian three-day eventing. Her quest for excellence led her to overcome the effects of soil deficiencies on feeds and improve her own horse’s diet using seaweeds, and the results seen in her horse led to a market demand for her proprietary blend.
Susan founded SOURCE, Inc in 1975, becoming a leading force in the animal supplement world for fifty years, and coining the term micronutrients. Her visionary, organic products for horses, dogs, and people introduced the power of micronutrients to the world, selling in forty countries and all fifty states. Anyone who watched a Triple Crown horse race over the past few decades witnessed the impact of her work. She co-founded the National Animal Supplement Council in 2001, receiving its first Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011, and co-founded the Maine Seaweed Council in 1993 to ensure resource sustainability.
A loving mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, Susan was also regarded as a second mother by numerous friends. She was a trailblazing woman in life and business, possessing a brilliant and creative scientific mind. Her standards for ethics and moral kindness were unsurpassed, and she worked tirelessly to do good for the world, its animals, and its people. She was a hero to many, and left the world better through her efforts.
Susan was preceded in death by her husband, David F Domizi III. She is survived by her sons David Domizi and Scott Domizi, David’s wife Denise Domizi, and granddaughters Roxanne Domizi and Lucille Domizi. There will be a celebration of life with family and friends on Saturday February 22nd 2025. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Guilford Interfaith Ministries (www.gimct.org) or the SladeChild Foundation (www.sladechild.org).
